Cake Smash | Splash | Photography Bolton
I've not done a session blog for a while, so it's definitely time to let you all in on one of our recent Cake Smash Sessions. In fact, this was the last session that took place in the studio before lock down.
I know that throwing back the memory to this session is going to make me smile, so I hope it does the same for you guys too!
Cake Smash sessions are extremely unpredictable, and although I am an organise freak, not knowing what baby is going to throw at us is simply the best bit! We all know that 1 year olds change their mind on what they like an don't like all of the time, and their moods can switch within a second. Also, most 1 year olds are on the move, whether it be with crawling or walking. So in this blog I am going to explain why Cake Smash and Splash sessions are so great!
I know there are a lot of people out there that think 'Cake Smash Sessions' are extremely cheesy and American. I'll admit some are, but here at Tilly White, remember our aim is to create simple, authentic images.
We use
- a crisp white backdrop
- a simple wooden cake topper
- a white iced semi-naked cake
- white balloons
- simplistic nappy covers or rompers
*With all of the above, the main focus is on baby, catching them being cheeky and having fun.
So, over to Myles....quite frankly he was just the dream! Myles came into the studio the week before his 1st Birthday. His mum had booked in on my March offer. She was a little weary about booking as she explained she wasn't a fan of most professional children's photo's, but she loved our style. Myles's mum let me take the lead and trusted my choices when it came to balloons and outfit.
*I always start the session with a few natural images of baby with and without our wooden 'ONE' sign. She said this was a real added bonus and didn't expect to have these images too. These natural images work well in a few ways:
- Most importantly they allow baby to get used to me and my equipment, to allow the best results for the main event.
- They let me work on getting my lighting and angles perfect.
- They allow me to capture baby crawling/ walking
- They help add to a real varied collection of images.
With Myles, we played with a our wooden skittles and he had a craw about
*Once I am happy with the images, I introduce the cake.
Myles got straight in there with a face plant (my favourite). He smashed, he bashed, he squished and he ate! Myles had so much fun, there was no stopping him. He had buttercream on his nose and his toes which made some real cute images.
I couldn't stop photographing him. My camera was full of Myles's character and personality, and I was scared to stop incase we missed something. Sure enough, Myles (not yet walking) gave us some standing shots. This moment during a 1st birthday session is priceless. I'd say 90% of babies that come in for their 1st birthday session's aren't yet walking so these are special moments to capture!
*Once Myles had had enough cake and mess, I asked his mum to strip him off whilst I filled up our bath. Upon mum and dads approval I'll add a little Childs Farm bubble bath too.
As expected Miles loovveeddd the bath. It's always a winner in every session. Babies just love the water and the bubbles and have such a great time. We blew some bubbles and sang lots of songs which was a lovely way to finish off such a happy session.
